Ivy League Affordability

10 03 2008

NBC Nightly News ran a piece on Friday March 7, 2008 in regards to rising college tuition costs as a part of an immigrant family. The story told of how college tuition is on the rise nationwide, but it is actually the Ivy League schools that are taking action. Schools like Harvard and Brown have recently takenĀ  endowment money-nearly $65 Billion-and made it available to help middle income families who have children accepted to the schools but are forced to turn away because of costs. Maybe other schools will follow in the footsteps of Harvard and Brown and make some sort of effort to minimize costs to the student while maximizing opportunity for all. Article

I agree. They call schools like WSU a ’state school’ which to most is synonomous with cheaper. When you sit down and take a look at the numbers though, you can see that the more expensive the school is, the more money you are eligable to receive in financial aid, the converse is true also. What this means is that the cost of school is relative. If you are eligable for fin. aid, then you will be able to pay for school, regardless of where you go.

It would be very nice if more schools could take the example of Harvard and Brown. I especially thought it was interesting since these are ivy league schools and personally I would have thought that these schools would have been the last to think of this kind of idea. I am an out of state student and have accumulated over 100,000 dollars worth of debt due to loans over my past four years here and it is definitely outrageous. To those on fixed incomes it’s almost impossible to achieve a higher education and since most jobs today require a college degree it seems like most people get stuck working at low paying jobs. It seems unfair that education would cost that much.
